Visit to the Wildlife Center – Wolf Pups!

I spent this gorgeous afternoon at the Wildlife Science Center www.wildlifesciencecenter.org playing with adolescent wolf pups! These pups came from unfortunate circumstances and abandoned as a result of the wolf hunt (mom was shot), and other unnatural reasons. This pack of wolves is composed of many different litters, and their pack leader is a large black dog named McClain. He cleaned them and played with them when they were bottle-fed babies. McClain is Mr. Mom. Once the pack status was set up, (i.e. McClain and Beta dog were in the enclosure) I was allowed to enter and spend some time with the wolves. Some were brave enough to approach me for some under-the-belly rubs and even a smooch. Around dusk, the howling began. They are just learning to howl like the big boys, so there were a few squeaks and interesting pitches, but they did a spooky job. It was magical.
